When Iarrived at 2:30a.m.,the buildingwas dark except for a singlelight in a ground floor window. Under suchcircumstances, many driversjust honk(按喇叭)once ortwice, wait a minute, thendrive away. But I had seen too many weakpeople who depended on taxisas their only means of transportation.

I could hear something being dragged across the floor. Aftera long pause, the dooropened. A smallwomaninher 80s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and apillbox hat, likesomebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylonsuitcase.

apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All thefurniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on thewalls,no equipment on the counters. In the corner was a cardboardbox filled with photos and glassware.

“Wouldyou carry my bag out to the car?” shesaid. I took thesuitcaseto the cab, thenreturned to assist the woman. She took my arm,and wewalked slowly toward the cab.

She keptthanking me for my kindness. “Its nothing,” I toldher. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want mymother treated.”
