Situated in the Haidian District northeast of Beijing, the Summer Palace is 15 kilometers from central Beijing. Being the largest and most well-preserved royal park in China, it also has been recognized as the Museum of Royal Gardens.

政治活动区，以仁寿殿为中心，是过去慈禧太后和光绪皇帝办理朝事、会见朝臣、外国使节的地方。

The residence area is composed of three complexes of buildings. The Hall of Happiness in Longevity, the Hall of Jade Ripples and the Hall of Yiyun were the palaces of Empress Dowager Cixi, Emperor Guangxu and his empress respectively.

生活居住区包括三大建筑群：乐寿堂、玉澜堂、宜芸馆，分别是慈禧、光绪及后妃居住之地。

The sightseeing area, which is the main area of the Summer Palace, is made up of front-hill area, rear-hill, back-lake area and Kunming Lake.
